#19 Understanding Tradition And Innovation In ISKCON Outreach
Amidst the myriad of instructions given by His Divine Grace to carry forward this movement, outreach takes utmost precedence. It is the arrowhead of our mission. Yet outreach is suffering in many parts of the world.
In the fast-changing world of technology, do you feel helplessly relegated to the background by archaic preaching methods or straitjacketed by tradition? Are some of ISKCON’s preaching strategies ‘too preachy’ or are overly ‘innovative’ and are these approaches jeopardizing the very soul of our movement’s core teachings? Are we afraid to speak or sitting comfortably behind the mask of tradition and Srila Prabhupada’s statements like “No Change,” “Do as I do”? The Outreach Committee has done a lot of thinking on these and similar questions. We would like to share our findings with you.
Bhakti Vinoda Swami serves as the chairman of the GBC Outreach Committee. He is also an ISKCON Zonal Secretary in South India, an ISKCON India Bureau member and an active BBT man – publishing, distributing and teaching the books of Srila Prabhupada. He has also been involved in studying strategic outreach in ISKCON for several years and travels widely giving seminars, workshops and talks for youth in universities, on public forums, in various
associations and to ISKCON congregations.
